Working Life of Earnings Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Richest 10%, Study Reveals

Based on fresh study, the average worker in the UK would have to work 52 years' worth of income to reach the wealth level of the most affluent 10% nationwide.

Growing Wealth Gap Across Decades

This research analyzed financial assets statistics from the Covid pandemic period and discovered that in 2006-08, it would have needed nearly four decades of average worker salary to enter the top 10th of the economic ladder.

An economic expert part of the study commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a regular employee setting aside their entire income across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Economic Gap

The study found that the difference between the wealth of the average person and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was £1 million in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by 2020-22.

The researcher further stated: "These differences are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is limited – those who commence life well-off tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the economic divide growing in absolute terms, the percentage of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the most affluent homes – termed "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the eighties," per the research.

During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from three times the annual GDP, to nearly seven and a half times.

Factors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "passive" gains, by means of rising house prices and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, as stated in the study.

These appreciations tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Generational Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in actual value, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Geographic Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed stark geographic differences, with the median value of net worth in the pandemic period standing at £290k in south-east England, where property prices have typically increased quickly, versus £110k in the north-east.

COVID Era Impact

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the information reveals numerous families were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes fared much better, though. "The typical family in the bottom income bracket saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds increase by £4,200," the report finds.
