TikTok Grants Viewers Power to Limit AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a updated setting that enables them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains over 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This development comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by new AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Our research shows that many people like content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to offer the community the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

The platform shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Collectively, over 100 m pieces of content are added to the platform each day, making AI content a minor part of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to limit or boost the level of artificial media they see by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and choosing the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the setting encompass current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its guidelines mandate users to tag convincing AI-made content, and it forbids harmful fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its community policies.

Furthermore, the platform will now attach an artificially created label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This step is designed to deter users from attempting to bypass the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also launching a $2 million awareness program for professionals and organizations to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist charitable organizations specializing in training programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its safety measures, amid controversy over plans to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. The company is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety team in the UK capital, with labor groups and digital protection specialists expressing worry that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A company official clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but automated tools can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content ahead of it is viewed by staff. The company reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its automated systems.

It is vital to balance people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
