This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
