EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
