British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
