Former President Trump has asserted that American military assets struck a "significant plant" in the South American country in recent days. However, the ex-leader offered no details on the precise nature or location of the strike, and there has been no additional comment from his team.
Unspecific Remarks Offered During a Talk Show
"US forces just knocked out – I don't know if you heard – they have a large facility, where the ships come from. Two nights ago, we knocked that out. So we targeted them very hard," Trump reportedly told Republican donor and businessman John Catsimatidis in a recent interview.
Possible Significance of a Verified Attack
If a American strike is verified, it would constitute the first attack on Venezuelan soil since the US Department of Defense began a buildup of American military presence in the Caribbean region to halt drug traffickers that the former administration alleges operate under the direction of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
The original purpose of the military buildup has transformed into a quarantine aimed at stopping the country's crude oil shipments.
Online Video and Administration Statements
Trump has for weeks stated that American military units are prepared to widen the military campaign by hitting targets within Venezuela, a move that would theoretically require legislative authorization.
A clip circulated online on 24 December purportedly showed an detonation said to be from an industrial zone in a Venezuelan state. However, the footage or the site in question has not been confirmed by third parties.
An administration official reportedly told a news network that the former president was referring to a drug facility in his comments.
Response and Current Military Posture
The Caracas administration has issued no statement on the alleged strike the former president referenced. Furthermore, there have been no independent reports from within the country concerning it.
The buildup of US military in the region – a posture certain officials have referred to as a naval quarantine – represents the largest naval operation of Trump's presidency.
Officials have refrained from labeling the operation as a full blockade, but have stated that approximately 15,000 personnel are deployed across the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf, including a carrier strike group, F-35 aircraft, and Coast Guard cutters to uphold existing economic sanctions.
